After being widowed, Jessie gives up her city affluence
to embrace life on a remote mountain in Virginia. Alone on Ashley Mountain, Jessie
discovers the world of nature and allows the isolation and beauty of
the setting to heal her emotional scars. Surrounded by green
mountains and rippling creeks, Jessie meets Luke, finding a vintage
love that strengthens and affirms.
Early one summer's day, Luke and Jessie took a
picnic lunch to the waterfall on the mountain. It was their favorite spot with its velvety greens
and misty freshness. After lunch, Luke asked Jessie to walk with
him to the edge of the mountain for a full view of the magnificent panorama.
As they approached the ridge, Luke said, "Down in the valley you
get the feeling you're living right at the foot of God and, from up here,
it's as if you can see his whole world below. And a grand world
it is." Then he cupped both her hands in his and searched
her eyes so deeply and with such expression that she felt almost intimidated. "At
our ages," he said, "life is short, and not everyone is given
a second chance at love. The truth is, I love you, Jessie, and
I want you to be my wife."
In all her thoughts of a better life, Jessie had
not conceived of marriage again. She wasn't even certain she could
handle marriage. After all, she was happy on the mountain and finally
at peace. Jessie stared at him, feeling a mixture of enchantment and
anxiety. She loved him. She was sure of that , but marriage? "I
don't know what to say, Luke."
"Say yes," he coached, smiling warmly.
"What about your family? Would they
accept me as your wife?"
"Let me tell you a story that my great-grandmother,
Spirit of the Light, once told me," Luke said. 'Many year ago,
there lived a beautiful Indian princess who was betrothed to a young
brave from her tribe, but she was secretly in love with a brave from
a rival clan. It was said in those days that deep within the soul we
long to capture the songbird's sweet melody and make it our own. But
not until the heart takes wings and soars do we discover that the music
has been inside us all along. We've only to open our spirits to set
the songbird free.
As the wedding day approached, the princess and
her brave realized there was only one way for them to be together.
One morning they climbed to the highest mountain peak of the Great
North Mountains and as the songbird's melody passed from their spirits
and drifted toward the sun, they soared together from the mountain
peak. As their spirits blended on the cool breeze, they became feathers
on the wind.'
"You have a choice, Jessie. You can
put off living until you have some guarantees, or you can set the songbird
free."
Jessie's eyes filled with tears, spilling over
the rims and rolling down her cheeks. This was one of those life-changing
moments that she had feared all her life.
"What's your choice, Jessie?"
"I want to set the songbird free."
