Prisms of the Soul

Prisms of the Soul Life's dark times evoke pain and wound the soul, causing us to stumble through the darkness in search of spiritual light. Turning to God in prayer is the answer to our suffering, and reading Scripture gives us hope. Through God's Word, we find the courage to reach for the healing grace of God's spiritual light.

When I live in the light of the Lord, my wounds are healed. But I, like so many people, falter between the shadows and the splendor. My resolve weakens. I become busy. Time is often my adversary. Even when I am healed, my suffering leaves prisms forever embedded in my soul. These deep shafts become part of me. They help to shape my character. But it is only in allowing the Lord to shine His light on my inner spirit that those prisms become a light in my world.

Excerpts from Prisms of the Soul

The Gray-winged Bird ~

Dear God ...

My personal universe stopped abruptly that fateful September morning as the gray-winged bird soared from the clouds, crashing through glass and steel. I watched as crimson flames exploded against brilliant blue sky. I held my breath in disbelief as another plane split apart the second lofty tower. The world watched in horror as those two gleaming shafts - the innate genius of man's accomplishments - sank from view in a cloud of dust and debris like soldiers felled in war. Innocent blood was spilled, and hate and anger seemed to have won the battle. Then we were told of the courage of those who lost their lives in the madness, and we witnessed the heroes who toiled beyond human endurance for our fallen martyrs. It became clear that regardless of the chaos and the turmoil, in spite of the agony and the pain, there was something more buried beneath the rubble. From hallowed ground, they unearthed Your noble Spirit. You inspired Your suffering children to reach out and touch one another with love. Hatred can never rise above Your righteousness, for hate spirals downward into the fires of hell. The human spirit is formed in Your Image, Father, and as the fires of hell burned that day, I witnessed Your Image spring forth from hearts and souls. I still grieve, but I know in my soul ...

"Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever ..." (Psalm 23:6)

We Passed By ~

Dear God ...

I was tired as I left the store with my bag of groceries and headed for the car. It had been a day filled with time constraints and stress. As I hurried along, from the distance my eyes held an approaching image. Something in the way he walked surprised my tired heart. With a sudden impulse, I looked away. What a lovely sunset, I thought to myself. Then excitement flashed again as his steps grew nearer. I clutched my package and thought hastily ... what shall I have for dinner? As he came closer, curiosity overcame my fears and I glanced his way. I couldn't deny his identity, though his face was rounder, with lines that traced life's journey. For an instant I thought his eyes were speaking to me. I was wrong. We passed in the twilight of day, too indifferent to ask, "Do you remember?" How could we? For once we had cared for each other like kindred spirits. We had promised that our friendship would stand up against life's storms. Then we drifted apart like the feathery seeds of a dandelion blown in diverse directions by a wind gust. Now, by chance, we passed by, and I asked myself, "What shall I have for dinner?" Oh, Father, is that how those You love deny You? Strengthen my inner resolve. Help me to honor each person, even those who have hurt me.

"Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed." (James 5:16)
